Why CoQ10 stopped being enough for me
I took CoQ10 for years and never questioned it. It was the sensible thing to take.
Then I spent eight months living in a house with mold in it, without knowing that was what I was dealing with. All I knew was that I was tired in a way sleep did not fix. Early nights, late mornings, and I would still wake up feeling like I had not slept.
When I finally worked out it was the house, a lot of it made sense. Mycotoxins interfere with mitochondrial function. My cells were not short of fuel. The machinery itself was taking damage, every day, for eight months.
And I was on CoQ10 the entire time. It did nothing.
That is not a failure of CoQ10. It was never the right tool for that problem. CoQ10 helps the mitochondria you have produce energy. It does not build you new ones. What CoQ10 actually does
Coenzyme Q10 is a compound your body makes on its own. It lives inside the mitochondria and moves electrons along the chain that produces ATP, which is the energy your cells run on. It also works as an antioxidant.

The first human trial appeared in Nature Metabolism in 2019. Sixty healthy older adults took 250 mg, 500 mg or 1000 mg daily for four weeks. Safety was the primary outcome and it came back favourable. The compound was absorbed at every dose tested.
A 2022 trial in Cell Reports Medicine measured improvements in muscle strength and exercise performance in middle aged adults, using 1000 mg daily.
Work continues, including trials looking at immune markers. The results so far are promising, but the evidence base is younger and smaller than CoQ10's. CoQ10 has decades behind it. If a long track record is what you want, that is CoQ10. If you want the compound aimed specifically at mitochondrial turnover, that is Urolithin A.
How to take it
The studied range is 250 to 1000 mg daily. Most people take it with food, though taking it consistently matters more than when.
